Pirates: Treasure Hunters for PS4 and PC is a multiplayer-oriented action MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) game, set in a fantasy universe combining elements of pirate stories and the steampunk genre. The game utilizes the free-to-play model, and was developed by the experienced independent Spanish studio Virtual Toys, also known from e.g. the Torrente adventure game series, as well as converting many Nintendo and Sony games for portable devices.
Mechanics
The basic mechanics of Pirates: Treasure Hunters are similar to those found in the majority of popular MOBA games, such as Dota 2, League of Legends or Smite. You play as one of the available characters and participate in dynamic skirmishes between teams of players. The battles are set on varied maps full of tasks to complete, e.g. overtaking strategic spots or destroying the enemy's totems and buildings. There are many playable characters available, from typical pirates and soldiers to priests, mages, and shamans. Each of them has their own unique combat techniques and equipment, and can specialize either in ranged attacks (with magic or firearms) on in melee combat.
However, Pirates: Treasure Hunters is not just a copy of the most popular titles in the genre; the game introduces a range of innovations. One of them is the character control system, which departs from the point-and-click model and allows you to use a gamepad or the WASD keys instead, which has a huge impact on the gameplay mechanics. The most important novelty is the availability of land and sea vehicles, such as ships, boats or mobile cannons. Those vehicles can be used by several team members at once, who can use them to move around and attacks their opponents. You can also use other equipment, e.g. grappling hooks and drawbridges, which allows you to try out many sophisticated strategies. All of this is complemented by the expansive character development system, which enables upgrading your characters' abilities as they gather experience points.
Game mode
Like other games in the MOBA genre, Pirates: Treasure Hunters features only a multiplayer mode. Every battle involves two teams of up to six players. It is also possible to participate in ranked battles, where teams fight each other in various leagues.
Technical aspects
Pirates: Treasure Hunters for PS4 and PC features attractive 3D visuals and an isometric view, resembling classic hack-and-slash titles. The business model is also notable for its friendliness — all the key upgrades can be unlocked as the game progresses or bought for the in-game currency. Real money can only be exchanged for temporary experience modifications and cosmetic character accessories, which do not really affect the gameplay.
