Phantom Breaker: Extra is an improved and extended version of Phantom Breaker a traditional 2D fighting game that draws on ideas from the best representatives of the genre, such as BlazeBlue, Street Fighter or Marvel vs. Capcom. The game was created by 5bp studio from Japan, specializing mainly in visual novel productions. Phantom Breaker is the developer's first attempt to create a fighting game. An additional attraction for those who know the previous titles of the creators is the presence of two heroines from their previous games.
Plot
The story presented in Phantom Breaker: Extra, like other representatives of the genre, focuses on a martial arts tournament. The tournament takes place in Tokyo - the prize is the fulfillment of the winner's deepest wish. However, the tournament is coordinated by a mysterious organization, the secrets of which will be revealed through the story mode. In the basic version of the game, we could choose from 14 different characters. Extra version introduces several new warriors. They all have their own unique fighting style and moves.
Mechanics
The combat system in Phantom Breaker: Extra is relatively simple and easy to learn. After choosing a character, we define the style in which we will fight. The third one (extra style) joins the two fighting styles available in the original - fast and strong. The fast style is about using combos, dodges, rapid attacks and offensive. By choosing the strong one, you will be able to block an opponent's attacks, stop the opponent's attempts to launch special moves and take less damage. Extra combines the features of the two previous ones. The warriors are controlled by an analog stick and buttons on the gamepad. During the duel, we will find two different indicators on the game screen. The upper one shows us the state of our health, while the lower one shows the state of points, which we use to perform special attacks. In the Extra edition, the developers have improved the movement speed of the heroes, at the same time equalizing their strength and chances in combat, and fixing many technical imperfections related to the controls.
Game modes
Phantom Breaker: Extra offers story mode, arcade, duel and online modes, where we compete with other players. The Extra edition improves the multiplayer gameplay, adding, among other things, the ability to observe the currently played duels.
Technical aspects
The 2D graphics in Phantom Breaker: Extra and the character projects may appeal to fans of Japanese animation and pop culture, but the quality is inferior to what we can see in similar top-of-the-range productions. The arenas we are fighting in aren't satisfying with the level of detail and are carelessly crafted, as are the characters of warriors whose 2D models aren't designed with HD resolutions in mind, which makes them seem blurred out. In addition, the creators have introduced new stages and improved the ones already available. They have also increased the number of animations and special effects that can be seen on them.
