Phantom Brave is a classic jRPG tactical game, which debuted in 2004 on PlayStation 2 consoles. The Japanese development team Nippon Ichi Software is responsible for its creation, known mainly due to the valued Disgaea series.
Story
Phantom Brave begins in 921 in a fictional world called Ivoire, most of which is the ocean, with life taking place mainly on numerous islands. The heroine of the game is an orphaned 13-year-old girl named Marona, who has an extraordinary ability to establish contacts with spirits. One such phenomenon is the knight Ash, who fell by the side of Marona's parents and out of respect for them decided to serve their daughter as a companion, watchman and advisor.
Because of his unusual skills, Marona does not enjoy the sympathy of other Ivoire residents and is often called "possessed" by them. However, the girl remembers the words of her deceased father, who once told her that only by helping people can we gain their respect and long-lasting gratitude. All this makes her decide to embark on a dangerous journey and use her abilities to face the ancient, destructive force that threatens her land.
Mechanics
In terms of mechanics, Phantom Brave is a classic representative of the jRPG genre. The core of the game is therefore exploration, the performance of subsequent role-playing missions and the fight against encountered opponents. The story presented here has been divided into twenty episodes, and in each of them we have a different main task, which reveals the meanders of the story before us. Additionally, individual levels and labyrinths are generated randomly, so that with each subsequent approach the game can run in a slightly different way.
As in the previous productions of the Nippon Ichi team, the fight takes place in turn-based system in special arenas, from which we can e.g. push the opponent out of the fight, eliminating him from the fight without the need to deprive him of all life points. A characteristic feature of Phantom Brave is the fact that during skirmishes we are able to summon up to fourteen different ghosts of different professions, such as Healer (healer) - thanks to which we can heal the fighting units, or Blacksmith (blacksmith) - who can improve our equipment. The fact that the spirits referred to take on the properties of various objects in which we order them to be incarnated is also a great variety, so that, for example, a spirit in the form of stone will be characterized by high strength, but low speed. The game does not lack the character development system, of course, and with each win, our subordinates grow in strength, gradually increasing to as much as 9999 levels.
Game modes
Phantom Brave is designed exclusively for single-player gameplay, but when the main plot is over, we get access to a number of new maps that allow us to face powerful opponents. Some of them come from an earlier game by Nippon Ichi, Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, and can be recruited to our team.
