Peregrin is an exploration adventure with elements of an action game, created by independent studio Domino Digital Limited. The game was published by Green Man Gaming Publishing for PC and iOS.
Plot
The source of inspiration for the story told in Peregrin can be found for in Hebrew believes as well as a number of works in the science fiction and fantasy genres. The game’s plot is set in a distant future – after a cataclysm which concluded the war between humans and gods, the surviving remnants of people split into various tribes. One of them is led by a woman named Abi, the game’s main heroine. The protagonist sets off on a long and dangerous journey across an uncharted land. Her mission is to fulfill an ancient prophesy and negotiate peace with gods as well as petition them to restore life to the her homeland.
The story is told throughout five chapters and unfolds by means of recorded dialogues with non-player characters, which still survive in that inhospitable world.
Mechanics
The events you are part of in Peregrin are presented from a top-down perspective. Gameplay is based on exploration of a variety of locations and solving environmental puzzles. As you play you get to visit many places, such as a picturesque coast, dead wilderness, or some remains of a civilization long gone, such as an abandoned smelter overrun by machines. The locations you explore are filled with monoliths and mysterious artifacts, examining which lets you learn the stories they contain.
There are also all sorts of dangers waiting for the protagonist, such as aggressive fauna or automatic turrets. However, the girl is gifted with a supernatural ability of taking control over minds of selected creatures – using that makes it possible for her to challenge more powerful adversaries as well as solve some puzzles, which e.g. may require her to move certain objects.
Technical aspects
Released for PC and iOS, Peregrin sports high-quality graphics, kept in characteristic stylistics, which resembles the console game Journey. The whole creates an effect of a painting, inspired by works by such artists as John Harris and Moebius. All that is complemented by atmospheric soundtrack composed by Chris Randle.
