Parallax for PC is a first-person perspective puzzle game with platforming elements and the first commercial project of independent studio Toasty Games.
Mechanics
The controls suggest that we are dealing with a typical first-person shooter. Nevertheless, the game mainly focuses on various puzzles and riddles, as well as extensive platforming. Each level has two parallel dimensions – black and white, both sporting different rules and accessed through stationary portals. Our goal is to create a path that will lead us safely to the end of the stage.
Most of the objects are influenced by numerous triggers that affect their behavior and appearance. Moreover, the platforms’ surfaces often defy the laws of physics, introducing a well-versed challenge. A typical level consists of a set of diverse zones, often connected by rail launchers that eject the hero in different directions. All these elements require a balanced approach, combining intelligence as well as dexterity.
Technical Aspects
Throughout the campaign we complete 25 levels. Aside from the main objective, each level contains a number of hidden features and secrets. The game is distinguished by its monochromatic visuals, impressing the player with their unique feel. The visuals are accompanied by a soundtrack composed by Derris Kharlan, who was behind the music tracks found in games such as Time Surfer, Dungeon Dashers, or Doki Doki.
