Papetura is an atmospheric point-and-click adventure game with logic game elements. The action is set in a world made entirely of cardboard and paper. The title's developer is Polish developer Tomasz Ostafin, who worked independently on the game for many years. The author was inspired by classic adventure games such as The Neverhood, games by the Czech studio Amanita Design such as Machinarium and Samorost, and animated films by the Japanese studio Ghibli. The title was also shaped by the author's fascination with microbiology and architecture.
Plot
The main character of the game is a lonely creature named Pape, who, cut off from the world, leads a sad and lonely existence in a flower prison. One day, however, he escapes and meets Tura, a magical creature he decides to take care of. Together they experience many adventures, facing dangers and fire-controlling monsters.
The story of the game is devoid of any spoken dialogues.
Mechanics
Paper is a classic point-and-click adventure game. During the adventure we visit many unique locations, where we have to solve logic puzzles, which often consist of interaction with elements of the environment. The title emphasizes the narrative layer, so the challenges do not give us a headache and do not force us to play with a guide in hand.
Technical aspects
Papetura is powered by the popular Unity engine. For the purposes of the game, the artist prepared detailed dioramas, which he made of paper and cardboard, and then photographed them many times in various lighting conditions. In a similar way he created all models of creatures and characters inhabiting the fantastic world. The atmosphere of the game is also created by music performed by the Czech composer Tomasz Dvorak (alias Floex), who prepared soundtracks for Machinarium and the Samorost series.
