Panzer Strategy is a turn-based strategy game set during World War II. The game was developed by the independent Starni Games.
Plot
In Panzer Strategy, players assume to roles of the famous generals commanding their troops in the most important battles during World War II (for example, one can command the German Forces as Erwin Rommel, Erich von Manstein, Heinz Guderian etc.). Interestingly enough, even though the game is based on historical sources, the developers allow us to change history – it is up to players to decide whether they want to conquer the world or fight for global peace.
Mechanics
The turn-based gameplay in Panzer Strategy takes place on hexagonal maps. Before entering the battlefield, players select one of the available commanders, each one with unique skills and perks for his army. During the game, one commands a wide variety of units (including infantry, tanks, artillery, armored trains, aircraft, battleships etc.) and has to use them to complete objectives during classic offensive or defensive operations. These missions can take place in narrow streets, while rescuing surrounded squads and evacuating the area, carrying out aerial or naval landing operations, chasing enemy forces and even aerial or naval battles.
One can achieve victory in three ways (genius, normal and tactical) determined by the time spent on finishing a given scenario and the number of additional objectives completed. Interestingly enough, a failure does not have to mean the end of the game, however, in the long run, it might result in the defeat of your army. The campaign is non-linear, thus most of the missions can be completed in any order. Some of them, however, become available upon meeting specified conditions. Landforms, atmospheric conditions and the day and night system (present in some of the missions) affect the result of each battle. For example, water is an obstacle for land vehicles and machines (although during winter, rivers freeze over allowing your vehicles to reach the other bank). Soldiers on higher grounds have a greater chance to repel enemy offensive (similarly to units stationed in forests, fortified areas, and among the urban infrastructure). Moreover, roads provide an additional speed bonus to infantry units and vehicles. At given points of battles, your forces are joined by "heroes" – historical figures that provide additional bonuses to nearby allies.
As you progress, new skills, upgrades, weapons, and tools for particular units are unlocked. Also, taking control over enemy headquarters and cutting the opponents off from their fuel and ammunition supply lines.
Technical aspects
Panzer Strategy is based on Unreal Engine 4 which results in high-quality visuals. Players are bound to appreciate it when freely manipulating the camera – even though the top-down camera provides the best way to observe and control the situation on the map, close-ups allow you to see detailed models of soldiers, vehicles, and machines.
