Old Man’s Journey for PC, iOS and etc. is a unique adventure game developed by the indie studio Broken Rules. This is the fourth game from the developers that debuted in 2009 with the well-received And Yet It Moves.
The Plot
As the game’s title may suggest, we play as an elderly man who goes on a journey to meet with his family. As we play, we will learn the most important parts of our hero’s life, including all ups and downs. What is interesting is the fact that not a single word is said during the game. Instead, developers decided to use visual narration and present the game’s plot only through pictures.
Mechanics
Action in Old Man’s Journey for PC, iOS and etc. is presented from a side-scrolling perspective. Gameplay focuses on exploration of various locations. Our hero, equipped with a walking stick and a backpack, will travel to small towns, river valleys, to the mountain tops, and even to the sea shores. Even though the game is in 2D, locations have some elements of the third dimension to them. Our hero can go deeper into the areas, but he has to solve unusual, more or less complicated riddles to do so.
We can freely change the terrain’s topography in Old Man’s Journey: for example, creating a hill will result in the appearance of a natural bridge across the river, or creating a valley will grant us access to the previously unaccessible area of the map. This is how we make our way through the game, slowly approaching our destination, and how we deal with various obstacles and traps that await us.
Technical Aspects
Old Man’s Journey for PC, iOS and etc. has eye-pleasing 2D visuals that bring to mind hand-drawn illustrations from children’s books. The game also has a melancholic, instrumental soundtrack.
