Okhlos Description
Okhlos for PC is a retro-styled action game that imitates old 16-bit productions. It was enriched with elements associated with the roguelike genre. The player's goal here is to lead crowds of angry ancient Greeks against the gods of Olympus and mythological creatures – their servants. Okhlos was created by two gamemakers belonging to Coffee Powered Machine - an independent, Argentinian team. This is the studio's second game, after Gravity Fleet (iOS) - a logic game set in space.
Mechanics
The game offers levels set in eight Greek polis – a scenario connected with Greek myths awaits the player in each of those. The in-game locations are procedurally generated, but a special emphasis was placed on characters the player meets. The player is required to defeat twelve gods of Olympus supported by mythological creatures, such as giants, cyclopes or gorgons.
Although the player's prime goal is to control the crowds, the players have direct control over one character only – a philosopher capable of gathering people and leading them to battle. A wide set of playable thinkers was included (those are not only Greek, because one will find Noe here for instance) - each of them has unique abilities at their disposal. When the protagonist dies in battle, the player takes on the role of another philosopher from the crowds. However, when no such figure appears to be present among the people, the player fails ultimately. An in-game encyclopedia is a useful addition, because notes about all the characters and creatures encountered appear here.
Technical aspects
As mentioned, Okhlos for PC offers retro-styled visuals imitating old 16-bit games. The action takes place in a three-dimensional environment, which is viewed from a camera perspective fixed high above. What is more, the characters are represented by flat sprites, which can make the player think that visuals are two-dimensional here.
