Of Light and Darkness: The Prophecy, released on PC, is a first-person point-and-click adventure game with logical elements. The debut studio Tribal Dreams is responsible for creating the title, but among its members, there are experienced developers such as Cliff Johnson, David Riordan and Ken Melville. The producer of the game is an industry legend, Brian Fargo, co-creator of such cult RPG games as Wasteland or The Bard's Tale series.
Plot
We play the role of Mike, who together with his sister Serin visits a residence to see an unusual, surreal Avant-Garde painting. After touching it, the characters are dragged inside and transferred to the last years of the 19th century. There Mike is considered to be the chosen one who, in order to save his sister and return to his time, must save the world from the apocalypse predicted by the prophets. To change the course of history and overcome the dark "Lord of the Seventh Millennium", Gar Hob, our protagonist must deal with the souls of famous sinners, such as Caligula, Ivan the Terrible and Maria Antonina Habsburg. To do this, Mike must determine which of the main sins each culprit has committed and then link it to the appropriate object or location.
Mechanics
In terms of mechanics, Of Light and Darkness is a combination of an exploratory FPP adventure like the Myst series with elements of logical games. In the course of the game, we mainly visit other locations and collect items such as colored orbs and artifacts that allow us to redeem the lost souls of sinners. During the game, we meet about fifty NPCs and the same number of more or less demanding puzzles. Interestingly, the gameplay has been designed to force the player to use the game's manual, which contains a lot of useful additional information. The advantage of the game is also the fact that many of its elements change randomly with each playthrough, which means, among other things, that we can get one of the several alternative endings.
Technical aspects
One of the most characteristic features of Of Light and Darkness is a very original graphic design, which was created by the famous surrealist Gil Burvel. The dark atmosphere is emphasized by the evocative, "post-apocalyptic" soundtrack. The protagonists were voiced by well-known professional actors, including James Woods and Lolita Davidovich.
