Numantia is a turn-based strategy game focused on recreating the historical atmosphere of the Numantian war – a conflict that was fought between the ancient Spaniards and the Roman Empire during the 2nd century BC. During the battles the player must strategically operate various units of Iberian or Roman troops and between the battles he or she must maintain logistics and resources of the army.

Numantia is a turn-based strategy game developed by a small Spain studio Recotechnology. The game debuted during the 2150th anniversary of the siege of the titular city.

Plot

The game takes its name from Numantia – an ancient city that was once founded by Arevaci in the territory of the modern Spain. Later the settlement became an important defense point for Celtiberians, who defended themselves from the Roman Empire in the 2nd century BC. The game enables the player to control Numantians or a Roman legion during the battles for control the northern areas of Iberian Peninsula. The title recreates the historical records of the long conflict and its battles. During the missions the player can fight side-by-side with historic commanders like the barbaric Viriathus and Scipio Aemilianus.

Mechanics

Two aspects of the gameplay are the foundations of Numantia for PC, PS4 and XONE. Turn-based battles are the base of the game. Depending on which side of the conflict the player had chosen, on the battlefield consisting of hexes he or she will see various types of units. Among them there are infantry, commanders, cavalry, archers and even units that charge on enemies on the backs of elephants. Each type of units feature different statistics and specializations and has unique special abilities. The battles can be fought as part of the singleplayer campaign or as single matches played against friends locally or through Internet.

Between the battles the warriors return to the main camp – the titular city in case of Iberians and a typical legion camp in case of the Romans. As the protectors of the Numantia the players must wisely manage limited resources. The legionaries must worry about supplies as well. The management task becomes more interesting when the player must find solutions to various problems and unpredictable events. A wrong decision might lead to starvation, shortage of gold or something even worse.

Technical aspects

Some cutscenes in the game are made by using paintings that are similar to frescos. Others are more similar to comics. The combat system is powered by functional three-dimensional graphics that are rather average. The game was created with attention to details and is strongly based on events from the chronicles. The battles and the whole campaign are based on the history and profiles of specific commanders. Historical information can be read in special section of the game.
