TechRaptor: 5.5 / 10 by William Worrall
Night Call is a game filled with good ideas, but terrible execution. Great characters and exploration are let down by superfluous mechanics and a lack of meaningful choices.
GamingTrend: 75 / 100 by David Flynn
Night Call may draw you with its murder mysteries, but you'll keep playing to learn about its numerous, interesting characters. It's incredibly well written, if a bit pretentious in the best way. Unfortunately, it's numerous glitches may frustrate players too much to keep playing.
PC Invasion: 3.5 / 5 by Jordan Aslett
The characters you meet in Night Call are the stars of this noir-style thriller. Interestingly, the crime plot takes a backseat to meeting the residents of Paris and learning about their struggles and success. Unfortunately, the game becomes repetitive after the first case due to duplicated dialog and a lack of gameplay evolution.
Night Call Description
Night Call is a noir adventure game, which takes place in Paris. The French studios MonkeyMoon and BlackMuffin are the developers of the title, so far specializing in computer animation and film production. The title was presented for the first time during the E3 2018 fair.
Story
In Night Call we play the role of an average Parisian taxi driver who works night shift. The protagonist struggles with financial problems and tries to make ends meet at all costs. Unfortunately, it is even more troublesome when the city is shaken by a series of brutal murders and the confused police cannot find the perpetrators. The protagonist turns out to be the last known person who had contact with one of the murderer's victims. Against their will, the law enforcement officers force the character to help with the investigation. From now on, he must not only perform his daily duties but also play a detective and without raising suspicion, ask his clients about the facts of the murders.
Mechanics
Fun in Night Call is based on conversations with other persons we transport. Players must avoid asking suspicious and inquisitive questions in order not to discourage the customers. On the other hand, if they are not too curious they won't find anything as a detective. We are rewarded with an appropriate amount of money for each course, which is credited to our account at the end of each following night. The tight budget must be big enough for us to pay the bills.
Each session with Night Call is a bit different, customers get in our taxi at random. The creators have prepared dozens of characters with different characters and stories. The non-linear plot has many endings, and various suspects may turn out to be the mysterious murderer.
Technical aspects
Night Call features stylized, two-dimensional black and white visuals inspired by noir detective stories. The soundtrack and music score of the game also harmonize with the atmosphere.
