Neva is a 2D adventure platformer about a woman traversing a magical land wrecked by darkness alongside a wolf pup. The gameplay revolves around the co-operation between the protagonist and her animal companion.
Neva is a 2D action adventure platformer. It was developed by Spanish studio Nomada, known for Gris and 12 Minutes.
Plot
The game is set in a magical land on the brink of destruction. It tells the story of a woman named Alba, whose fate becomes intertwined with an orphaned wolf pup, who's lost its mother to the forces of darkness.
The pair sets out on a journey through the once-beautiful world collapsing before their very eyes.
Mechanics
Neva is a 2D platformer with heavy adventure elements. The player explores different locations, gathers items, avoids threats, traps and fights enemies. There are also plenty of puzzles to solve.
The gameplay revolves around the co-operation between Alba and the wolf pup, both during arcade segments and puzzles. The pup gradually grows up through the course of the story, gaining new abilities but also straining its relationship with Alba.
Game modes
The game only supports singleplayer.
Technical aspects
Some of the strongest aspects of Neva are its beautiful visuals, impressively designed locations and smooth character animations.

The Game Awards 2024 was a great show
I wasn’t sure what to expect attending the 2024 Game Awards. The trailers and reveals were some of the best, but how it honored game developers was a Game Changer.

TheSixthAxis: 7 / 10 by Adrian Burrows
Neva is almost brilliant. This is a finely crafted game let down by too much empty time-wasting, untapped potential in its puzzling, and a rather onerous desire to make people cry.
Screen Rant: 9 / 10 by Leo Faierman
It must be a challenge to thread inspiration’s needle in a game like this one. Critics and players might point to Neva’s most obvious references as thematic shortcuts, but the game’s personality and careful sense of craft always shined through. I’m tempted to compare Neva to Playdead’s influential duology of Limbo and Inside, even though the tonal qualities remain quite different, primarily for the impeccable quality of its design and richness of its world, dialogue-free as it may be. It's a brief experience overall, but most players should feel compelled to happily join Alba and Neva in starting the seasonal cycle anew, their screenshot key on a hair trigger.
Slant Magazine: 4.5 / 5 by Mitchell Demorest
The themes here are painted with a broad brush, but their refusal to get down to specifics doesn’t mean that they don’t still ring true. The game bittersweetly fixates on parenthood, as you watch Neva herself grow and outpace Alba as the seasons pass, and on the destruction of the natural world, which in turn makes it more hostile and violent. And then there’s the connective thread between the two—that even when it feels like everything is falling apart, because sometimes it literally is, the only thing you can do is keep moving.
