Murder by Numbers is a visual novel adventure game with clearly outlined logic elements. In the game we play the role of an actress who tries to clear herself of murder charge with the help of a robot called SCOUT. Developers from the independent studio Mediatonic - creators of Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, Gears POP! and Hatoful Boyfriend - are responsible for developing this title. The publisher is Irregular Corporation (known for PC Building Simulator).

Plot

In Murder by Numbers we play as Honor Mizrahi, an actress who played in a popular detective series for years. Unfortunately, she was laid off, and soon afterwards her former boss was found dead. With the help of SCOUT the robot, the woman tries to solve the mystery and clear her name.

Mechanics

Murder by Numbers is a typical visual novel game. The gameplay boils down to reading the dialogues, observing the illustrations and making occasional decisions that have an impact on the story. During the game, we visit a number of crime scenes (shown as two-dimensional illustrations), such as dance clubs or television studios. An important role is played by conversations with other characters, thanks to whom we gain circumstantial evidence enabling us to conduct an investigation.

The devs have enriched the visual novel formula with logic game elements. During the game we solve puzzles, which are most often based on the proper arrangement of numbers or performing calculations.

Game modes

Murder by Numbers can only be played solo. The mainstay of the game is the story campaign.

Technical aspects

Murder by Numbers features 2D visuals based on hand-drawn manga style illustrations, characteristic for many games of this type (the character designers is Hato Moa - the artist known from Hatoful Boyfriend). It is also worth noting the soundtrack, prepared by the industry veteran Sugimori Masakazu (Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective, Viewtiful Joe).
