Moonray is a soulslike action RPG set in a science fiction universe. This debut project from Element 115 is also an artistic experiment, with surreal visuals that stand out from the competition. The game's development was funded through crowdfunding on the Fig.co platform, where the creators received over $77,000 with a minimum goal of $10,000 .
Plot
The action of Moonray takes place in a surreal universe of the future on the planet It-Ao. Thousands of years ago, Iltar, who lives here, discovered the potential of a mysterious substance called miium and gained almost god-like powers thanks to it. Millennia later, the inhabitants of one of her forgotten worlds, although worshipping her, wanted this power for themselves. They managed to imprison the goddess and for millennia they ripped from her further secrets of the miium. However, Iltar, though captured, did not remain inactive. In secret from her tormentors, she created a new entity, a warrior capable of defeating the ever-growing cult before its members could harness the full potential of the miium. The scriptwriter behind Moonray is cartoonist Grim Wilkins, a comic book artist best known for Mirenda, but also the Prophet Earth series.
Mechanics
Like most soulslike games, Moonray is played from a third-person perspective (TPP), and the game takes place in real time. The protagonist uses mainly cold weapons, but also ranged attacks to deal with hordes of enemies. Victories earn him miium, which is used to upgrade his stats, weapons and active and passive skills, allowing him to keep pace with increasingly powerful opponents. These, by convention of the genre, are quite a challenge and can rarely be defeated by mindless attacks - a bit of strategy is also required.
Technical aspects
The developers of Moonray are proud of their use of the latest shaders and visual effects, as well as the unique 3D graphics based on Unreal Engine technology. Surreal locations, full of amazing (and often floating) objects and unique enemies, are reminiscent of the work of painters such as Salvador Dali. Comic book panels also appear from time to time to help narrate the game. The entire game is accompanied by an atmospheric soundtrack composed by Marijus "Tena Walls" Adomaitis, featuring over 3 hours of music.
