Monsterpatch
Release Date: December 2025
RPG, turn-based, farm, 2D, crowdfunding, life sim, indie games, singleplayer
An RPG with life simulation mechanics, created in a style similar to older entries of the Pokemnon series. In Monsterpatch we become a wizard and travel the world, participating in turn-based battles using the so-called MoN creatures. The game also allows us to interact with NPCs and to expand our own city.
Monsterpatch is an RPG maintained in a style reminiscent of the first installments of the Pokemon series, mixed with a life simulation. The game was developed by Sean Young - an independent developer from SmashGames studio, who has such projects as Littlewood, Magicite, or Roguelands in his portfolio. The implementation of this project was possible partially thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter.
Gameplay
Many major Pokemon games come out in two editions and it's similar here. Monsterpatch initially allows us to choose one of two versions - Skyfarer and Aurora. We still need to choose two creatures called MoN, who will accompany us on our adventures.
Exploration and turn-based battles
We watch the action in the game using a top-down view. We play as a wizard exploring the world and engaging in turn-based duels (their speed can be adjusted) with his male and female colleagues from the same profession. The so-called Archwizards stand at the helm of the houses ruling the city, and on the battlefield they use unique tactics.
Throughout the subsequent duels with wizards and archwizards, we develop our MoNs and also acquire more creatures. The key to success is to assemble a team whose members will complement each other. It is worth remembering that the affiliation of creatures to particular houses determines their strengths and weaknesses.
Character development and spells
As we progress, the potential of our character increases. We unlock and improve spells used by the protagonist both on the battlefield and during exploration. Spells allow us to strengthen our characters, as well as cut down trees, gather resources (wood, stone, ore, fruits and vegetables) and use the building system.
Controlling our own city
Exploration and fighting opponents is just one layer of gameplay. The second one is relaxing in our own city, which we can expand according to our own preferences. The game allows us to modify the terrain topography, erect buildings, place various objects and mark out paths, as well as plant crops and harvest them. We can also interact with NPCs and recruit them as town residents. It is possible to gift them with MoNs so they can create their own teams.
Graphics
The two-dimensional graphics of Monsterpatch were created using pixel art technique.
