Mixtape is an adventure arcade game created by the Beethoven and Dinosaur studio, known for the well-received The Artful Escape. It was published by Annapurna Interactive, which has many unique productions in its portfolio, such as Journey, Stray and 12 Minutes.
Plot
The action of Mixtape takes place in the 1990s in Northern California (USA). The main characters of the story are three high school students. On the last night before graduating from high school they decide to go to a farewell party. On the way, a playlist of favorite songs draws the characters into dreamy reconstructions of their most important memories, such as their first teenage kiss, skateboarding trips, or troubles with the police.
Gameplay
The proper part of the gameplay in Mixtape - the "awake" part - takes the form of typical adventure sequences in third-person perspective (TPP), with exploration and dialogues. The other part is experiencing the characters' memories. It's done in various conventions, often in arcade form. We can be watching the action both from behind the characters' backs and in a form reminiscent of a 2.5D platformer.
Music and graphics
The journey of our characters is accompanied by iconic music from the 1990s, with performers such as The Smashing Pumpkins, Iggy Pop or Joy Division. Mixtape is also distinguished by its graphics - all the animations are rendered at a reduced frame rate.
