Mercenaries Saga Chronicles Switch

Mercenaries Saga Chronicles is a collection of tactical Japanese role-playing games developed by RideonJapan. The set contains three games – Mercenaries Saga, Mercenaries Saga 2: Order of the Silver Eagle and Mercenaries Saga 3: Gray Wolves of War.

Plot

The trilogy takes place in a classic fantasy realm that combines medieval setting with fantasy traits. The first game tells the story of a war started by the kingdom of Mondoa that decided to conquer smaller neighbors out of fear of great empires of the continent. The players assume the role of Captain Leon who leads a group of mercenaries attempting to make a profit of the conflict. They offer their services to everyone who is ready to pay for them.

Mercenaries Saga 2: Order of the Silver Eagle focuses on Claude, the leader of the titular order. The Silver Eagles are fighting for the prince who is poisoned with an arrow during a hunt. In order to save him, the protagonist and the best warriors from the order are starting a journey in search for the legendary flower that can be used for creating an antidote.

The third entry in the series, Mercenaries Saga 3: Gray Wolves of War, takes place on the southern continent that until recently was controlled by scattered tribes. Despite their bravery, they weren’t able to repel the invasion of more military and technologically advanced northern empire. After the war the conquerors created a puppet government and used it to aggressively exploit natural resources. The player assumes the role of a leader of a mercenary squad. He or she is hired to break local uprisings.

Mechanics

All three games available in Mercenaries Saga Chronicles for SWITCH are classic tactical role-playing games similar to such bestsellers like Final Fantasy Tactics, Ogre Battle and Fire Emblem. The gameplay focuses on fighting turn-based battles during which players lead a squad of a few heroes.

The battle system is quite advanced and being victorious requires carefully positioning characters on the maps, taking advantage of surroundings and properly using various special abilities of warriors.

During the game the characters are gathering experience points that can be used for developing their combat skills and teaching them new abilities.

Technical aspects

The graphics in Mercenaries Saga Chronicles use a retro style with large pixels, inspired by role-playing games released on 16-bit and 32-bit consoles.
