Memories of Mars is an online survival game with FPP shooter elements. The game was developed by Limbic Entertainment from Germany – the studio known for such titles as Might & Magic: Heroes VII and Might & Magic X: Legacy. The production debuted in spring 2018 on Steam’s Early Access.
Plot
The action takes place in 2118. After a few colonisation attempts which ended as a failure due to regular occurrences of deadly solar flares, humans gave up on the idea of populating the Red Planet. Upon a hasty evacuation from Mars, our species left a lot behind – abandoned stations, resources, technology, and a couple of asleep clones who are starting to wake up. The meaning of their purposeless lives is only one now – to survive.
Mechanics
Gameplay of Memories of Mars begins at the moment we take control of a clone who just woke up and has barely anything with them. To make do on this unwelcoming planet, they need to go on a journey in order to find resources which can be used to build a shelter. Exploration and upgrading the asylum are the core elements of gameplay. Without a proper base, the chances of survival are fairly low – the dangers of the Red Planet lurk around every corner, be it fierce weather, cosmic radiation, or mysterious enemies who are, just like the clones, the remnants of other colonisation attempts. We can avoid or fight them with firearms. Each contact with the harsh environment depletes one of the clone’s condition parameters. There are five of them – health, stamina, nutrition, body temperature, and oxygen. If one of them drains completely, the clone may die.
Being an MMO title, Memories of Mars emphasises interactions between the clones controlled by the players. They can form alliances, exchange resources, and build common shelters which make surviving easier. However, nothing stops them from fighting against each other, stealing, or destroying other bases. All depends on the preferred tactics.
Memories of Mars features random events. From time to time, the Red Planet poses an extreme danger, and in order to stay alive, even sworn enemies have to cooperate.
Technical aspects
Memories of Mars is powered by Unreal Engine. The players are free to explore the map measuring 16 square kilometres. The world is composed of deserts, mountains, craters, canyons, and places built by men – abandoned cities, mines, factories, laboratories, and vehicle wrecks. Altogether, there 85 interesting locations to be discovered.
