M.A.X. 2: Mechanized Assault & Exploration

M.A.X. 2 is a continuation of the original strategy game from 1996, the authors of which combined the fascination with the growing popularity of the RTS strategy genre with the adoration of classic turquoise, creating a unique genre hybrid. The second part of the game was prepared by the same development team, belonging to Interplay's Flat Cat studio, and continues the plot started in "the only one".

After years of colonization of new planets and access to the necessary resources, the human race has finally managed to rebuild its former strength. As a result, people were admitted to the most powerful race, the intergalactic Concord, whose task was to care for peace in the cosmos. However, a new, hostile Sheevat breed appeared on the horizon, wishing to demolish the order in the universe. And it is she who will be our main opponent in the second part of the game. This time, however, we are not at the head of one of the human factions, but we take command of a whole race of people (in a campaign) or of any other aliens (in individual missions). As in the original, each of the playable races has its own strengths and weaknesses.

The aim of the game is to expand the base, by building further economic and military structures, extraction of raw materials available in the area and defense our territory against attacks of the hostile Sheevat breed. According to the model started by the first part of the game, M.A.X. 2 allows you to play in three different variants: RTS, turn-based and original hybrid mode, combining elements of both species. However, in order to reach a wider audience, in the new version of the game, many difficulties were abandoned, which resulted in shifting the centre of gravity towards a real time strategy.

Among the noteworthy novelties one should mention, first of all, the influence of the terrain on the course of the fight. This allows, among other things, the introduction of new combat strategies, such as using the hollows of the terrain or hiding one's units in the forest and attacking from hiding. There is also an element of morale of units and the possibility to place up to eight spy cameras, controlling enemy positions. The number of available units described by several parameters, which can be improved during the game, has doubled.

The single player game involves participating in four campaigns with nine missions each or in 24 stand-alone scenarios. We have not forgotten about the extensive editor, which allows us to create hundreds of consecutive missions, in which we ourselves determine the conditions of victory and a number of other parameters. Up to 6 players can take part in multiplayer mode at the same time, competing over the Internet, local network or in "hot seat" mode. The graphic design has been significantly improved compared to the original. In addition to the smooth zoom, there is also the ability to tilt the map at an angle of 60 degrees, making it easier to judge the terrain.
