Embedded in the universe of Marvela mobile free-to-play fight, enriched with elements of RPG and collectible card game. In the game we take part in a big tournament organized by a collector, in which the most famous heroes from the world of Marvel face the greatest villains of this universe. As the game progresses, we create a unique team of heroes and gradually develop their skills.
MARVEL Contest of Champions is a fighting game with RPG elements created for mobile platforms, set in the popular Marvel universe. The production, based on the license of the American concern, was created by one of the most resilient producers and publishers of mobile and browser games - Kabam company. It is worth noting that this is the first fighting game in the studio's portfolio which specializes mainly in games based on movie licenses. The title uses a typical free-to-play model with optional microtransactions.
Plot
The plot of the game, typical for figthing games, is rather simple. The evil Collector (known from Guardians of the Galaxy comic books and movies) imprisoned the heroes inside magical crystals. Looking for entertainment, he decided to organize a big tournament in which the greatest heroes from the world of Marvel will compete with the greatest villains of this universe controlled by the Collector. The player's task is to represent Earth in the tournament and fight against other opponents in order to defeat the Collector and restore order in the universe.
Mechanics
The simplified ombat mechanics, typical for mobile devices, resembles mobile versions of Mortal Kombat X or Injustice: Gods Among Us. The game has no on-screen buttons, and you can control the character by tapping the left or right side of the screen (responsible for defensive and offensive movements respectively) and making appropriate gestures. After charging a special bar, we can also perform powerful special attacks at certain moments, which usually end up taking a large amount of your opponent's energy.
Just like in the aforementioned games made by NetherRealm studio, MARVEL Contest of Champions features RPG and card game elements - by making progress in the game, we create and develop our own team of heroes. When you start playing, you get only two characters - Spider-Man and Wolverine. However, you can spend the in-game currency to purchase more crystals containing random characters from the Marvel universe, each of which is characterized by individual advantages and disadvantages. At launch, MARVEL Contest of Champions had 25 playable characters but this number was increased with the successive updates.
Since the game is available in a free-to-play model, the gameplay is of course subject to a whole series of restrictions, and the main one is the depletion of energy, which allows you to take part in a limited number of fights at once. Of course, you canspend your money on microtransactions to replenish your energy, buy a lot of useful gadgets and significantly speed up the development of your heroes, which can give you an advantage over other players.
Game modes
In addition to the story mode, where we complete various missions, the developers at Kabam also added a multiplayer PvP mode, in which we meet in special arenas with other players from all over the world. An integral part of multiplayer mode is chat, where we can talk to other participants in real time.
Technical aspects
As for the presentation, MARVEL Contest of Champions looks similar to Mortal Kombat X and Injustice: Gods Among Us. The fights take place on three-dimensional arenas, but the characters move only in two planes. The main difference in the graphics is, of course, the use of Marvel's characteristic comic style.
