Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey is a remake of an action arcade game that hit Nintendo DS in 2009. As with the original, Nintendo was responsible for developing the game.
Story
The story told in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey focuses on the title Bowser, the black character of the narrow hydraulics series. The antagonist ate many magical mushrooms, through which he began to absorb everything he encounters on his way, dramatically increasing his size. Even Mario and Luigi found their way into his belly, who have to get out at all costs. However, before they take control of his mind, which will enable them to regain their freedom, they will have to help their adversary in the fight against Fawfel, who is trying to carry out a coup d'état in the Mushroom Kingdom.
In addition to the story told in the original, the described game includes the stages in which we play Bowser Junior, learning about the events preceding the main plot.
Mechanics
While playing in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey we control Mario and Luigi (whose actions are presented from a side perspective on the lower screen of the console) and Bowser (shown on the upper display, from a camera suspended above his head).
In the course of the struggle, we deal mainly with traversing the visited locations, solving riddles pushing the story forward (some of which require direct cooperation between the Mario brothers and their oversized opponent) and turn-based combat with the opponents whom Bowser can not only attack with his fists or fiery blasts but also absorb by exposing them to Mario and Luigi.
This is complemented by a variety of mini-games in which a duo of narrow heroes helps Bowser overcome the difficulties encountered; Rump Command deserves special attention - thanks to it the monster drastically increases its size during the flights, which is reflected in the need to position the console vertically, rhythmic hit the screen with a stylus, as well as blowing the microphone to maintain the pace of action.
Over time, all heroes gain more and more powerful skills and advance to new levels of experience; the game implements a system of ranks awarded in return for gaining a certain level, which provide bonuses in the form of additional space for items stored in a backpack, the ability to visit certain shops or gain valuable equipment.
Technical aspects
For the purposes of Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey developers have thoroughly refreshed visuals; however, the whole thing is still kept in an eye-catching, "candy" style characteristic of the series.
