Malebolgia is a gloomy action horror, which draws inspiration from works of Dane Alighieri, Ars Goetia, and 20th century European culture. An independent, Belgian developer, Jochen Mistiaen, created the title.
Plot
The Italian title means the eight circle of hell described in Divine Comedy by Dante. You assume the role of an older man named Leopold who, in unclear circumstances, finds himself in a Victorian mansion built in the heart of hell. Looking for a way out, the hero meets familiar faces and a multiplicity of hellish creatures. Whether the hero gets out or not depends solely on the player.
Mechanics
During gameplay, you explore various locations of the ominous palace, filled with puzzles and murderous demons. Interestingly, the place of action constantly changes – as the time goes by, different locations of the mansion may pose different challenges. The hero’s arsenal is not very wide - Leopold has only a torch and a halberd with which he battles creatures and tough bosses. Moreover, the combat system is very simple – the hero can move his halberd only up and down.
Technical aspects
Jochen Mistiaen’s production focuses on a unique atmosphere and a number of dark, mystical references. The impression is further emphasised by the cel-shaded visuals and play of light and shade.
