Lord Winklebottom Investigates is a point-and-click adventure game inspired by works by Agatha Christie and Arthur Conan Doyle. The game was developed by an independent one-man studio Cave Monsters, or more precisely - by Charlotte Sutherland, who previously worked for companies such as Sumo Digital, Rare and Electronic Arts.
Plot
Lord Winklebottom Investigates takes us on a journey to an alternative version of the 1920s in which anthropomorphic animals replace people. The main character of the game is the title Lord Winklebottom, a giraffe detective, who is invited to Barghest Island by his childhood friend, the salamander Aristotle Gilfrey. However, before the protagonist arrives, the host is murdered. There is nothing else left for out protege but to start an investigation immediately and find the murderer. Winklebottom is accompanied by the hippopotamus doctor Reginald Frumple, a specialist in animal anatomy.
Mechanics
While playing Lord Winklebottom Investigates, we are mainly engaged in conversations with NPCs in order to get as much information from them as possible (both about the island's inhabitants and other guests invited by Aristotle), searching for useful objects and solving puzzles. It is worth noting that the death of Admiral Gilfrey is not the only mystery hidden by the island of Barghest; its subsequent secrets can be encountered by leaving the walls of the estate and visiting places like the family crypt of the deceased, the old lighthouse or the forest.
Technical aspects
Lord Winklebottom Investigates features colorful, hand-drawn visuals in cartoonish style. The game is operated via a clear and intuitive interface.
