The Lord of the Rings MMO PC

The Lord of the Rings MMO is an online RPG by Amazon Games' Orange County division. They are also responsible for New World, an MMORPG from 2021. The game is being created in collaboration with the Swedish company Embracer Group, who, since 2022, own Middle-earth Enterprises and thus the rights to J.R.R. Tolkien's literary works.

World and plot

The game is set in the Middle-earth, the world created by the British author, its plot based on the events of two of his most popular novels - Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

The work on The Lord of the Rings MMO began in 2023. Its development team is led by Rich Lawrence. The developers have tried to heavily inspire themselves with J.R.R. Tolkien's works while being aware their goal is to create a good game rather than an extremely faithful adaptation.

Technical aspects

The game runs on the Azoth engine - the same as New World - though it's been significantly developed so its capabilities don't limit the developers.

Trivia

This isn't Amazon Games' first attempt at creating a The Lord of the Rings MMO. In 2018, a project of the same name was announced, co-developed with Athlon Games. It was canceled after three years. As it turned out later, the reason for the cancelation was the takeover of Leyou Technologies holding - which Athlon Games is a part of - by Chinese corporation Tencent.
