Secrets Of The Maw is an expansion for Little Nightmares, a platformer game developed by Tarsier Studios. The production is available for PC, XONE and PS4 and is divided into three episodes – the first one debuted in July, 2017.
Plot
Contrary to the vanilla game, in Secrets Of The Maw, we follow a new hero – a boy named The Runaway Kid who tries to escape an underwater facility called The Maw. The expansion uncovers the darkest secrets of the place and answers a number of questions that remained unanswered in Six’s venture. It also presents her journey from a different perspective since stories of The Runaway Kid and the girl intertwine on several occasions. What’s interesting, the three chapters of Secrets Of The Maw are standalone and can be completed in any order, even without playing the core game, although the developers stress that it’s best to play them in the order of release.
Mechanics
The gameplay in Secrets Of The Maw for PC, XONE and PS4 is very similar to that of the vanilla Little Nightmares. It is still a dark 2.5D platformer game focused on exploration and solving puzzles. The developers introduced three new locations in which we have unique tasks to do. In the first chapter, entitled The Depths, we are taken to the deepest, flooded depths of The Maw. Because of that, we have to find a way to wade through the water, having the dangers lurking beneath the surface in mind. In the second episode, we use the help of Nomes when traversing the engine room.
Technical aspects
Little Nightmares: Secrets Of The Maw for PC, XONE and PS4 is characterized by high-quality graphics and an atmospheric soundtrack full of unsettling noises. Compared to other platformer games, the title stands out primarily with its dark, grotesque style.
