Kong: The 8th Wonder of the World is an action-adventure game with puzzle-solving vibe, created by Ubisoft Studios. It is based on the movie King Kong directed by Peter Jackson, creator of The Lord of the Rings.
The main hero of Kong: The 8th Wonder of the World is Jack Driscolla (in the movie played by Adrien Brody, also known from Roman Polansky’s The Pianist), who, together with two of his friends: Ann and Carl, comes to a seemingly deserted island (called the Skull Island). However, the very first steps on this new land make it clear that this mysterious island is inhabited by prehistoric reptiles.
While controlling Jack you have to cooperate with your team to fight back charging monsters using pistols, rifles, spears, and any weapon that gets into your hand. Since the dinosaurs are usually several times stronger than the heroes, you have to use the environment to hurt them. Sometimes you come across groups of natives, who also want to take your life. Each of Jack’s friends has unique abilities and can use items others cannot. This introduces a degree of tactics into the game – you have to thoughtfully switch between the characters to select those whose skills are the most appropriate at the time. The game also lets you play as the King Kong himself. At these moments, the isometric camera switches to the side view. When playing as King Kong, your objective is to tear apart incoming opponents and take part in action-packed, unpredictable duels with monstrous Tyrannosauruses. There are also arcade gameplay elements – as the giant gorilla you have to climb on rocks and strong lianas. At a later stage, you move to New York, where as King Kong you have to deal with traffic and hostile human forces.
The game features comic-like graphics, seemingly hand-drawn. Its strongest points are the characters, who are not only very detailed, but also amazingly animated, the jungle and the city, as well as opponents who look well-made.
