Another entry in the popular series of platform games developed by, among other developers, the Japanese studio HAL Laboratory. The game was developed for Nintendo Switch and – similarly to previous entries in the series – it enables the player to assume the role of the titular character, who travels through vast and varied levels.
Kirby Star Allies is another entry in the popular series of platform games. It is also the first game in the series released on SWITCH. It was developed by HAL Laboratory – the developer responsible for a few previous Kirby games and the Boxboy series.
Mechanics
Similarly to previous entries in the series, in Kirby Star Allies for SWITCH the player assumes the role of the titular character that travels through vast and varied levels. During the game the pink ball controlled by the protagonist must jump between platforms, avoid traps and dangers that fill the levels, and fight encountered enemies – among which there are powerful, large bosses.
The developers introduced a novelty that enables the player to transform his enemies into allies. In order to do it, Kirby must throw hearts at the enemy until he joins his side. The companions (there can be up to three of them) can be controlled by artificial intelligence or by other players.
What’s interesting, this functionality enabled the developers to increase the moveset of Kirby. Now he can combine his abilities (the so-called copy abilities) with the power of elements obtained from his companions. This can be used for solving some of the environmental riddles. In addition to that, Kirby’s and his allies’ attacks can be combined into powerful combinations.
Technical aspects
Kirby Star Allies for SWITCH takes place in a 2.5D environment. It means that, although the gameplay is based on classic, two-dimensional principles, the graphics are fully three-dimensional. The graphics of the game are nice looking thanks to the rich colors and cartoon-like style.
