King Arthur: Legion IX is an expansion to the tactical RPG, King Arthur: Knight's Tale. Like the base game, it was developed by the Hungarian studio NeocoreGames, known worldwide for The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing and Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor - Martyr.

Plot

Like the base game, King Arthur: Legion IX is set on the mystical island of Avalon. The kingdom must face an entirely new threat, as the Roman Legion IX has found its way there and is preparing to invade. The game's protagonist is a tribune, leading his forces, discovering the remains of a Roman colony in Avalon, following the trail of the Lady of the Lake.

NoobFeed: 75 / 100 by Joy Rahman

For what it's worth, King Arthur: Legion IX is a great deal. Originally planned as a DLC for Knight's Tale, it evolved into a standalone game, and I could see that being a smart decision. If you enjoy turn-based strategy games like XCOM, Rogue Trader, or Baldur's Gate 3, this title is worth trying.

King Arthur: Legion IX was done and dusted far quicker than I anticipated. However, I enjoyed every moment. Yes, some of the battles are time-consuming and unnecessarily challenging, but this kept me interested throughout. If you haven’t played the first instalment, do not let that put you off. This sequel was great, and my lack of experience didn’t undermine my time with this great, albeit flawed game. If this review has piqued your interest, you can pick up a copy from the Xbox store!

Multiplayer First: 7.5 / 10 by Vitor Braz

King Arthur: Legion IX doesn’t represent a true step forward from King Arthur: Knight’s Tale, and in some regards it’s even a simplified version of said game. The value for those who own the first one is debatable, but if they are looking for more of the same, this is a good option although it may disappoint in some aspects; on the other hand, new players may get more enjoyment from this tactical game, assuming they are looking for a challenge and aren’t bothered by the lack of playable characters or the middling writing.

The main pros of the game

  • Engaging Combat Mechanics: Players appreciate the turn-based tactical combat, which remains a highlight of the game. The battles are described as satisfying and require strategic thinking.
  • Unique Theme: The concept of leading undead Roman legionaries adds a unique twist to the gameplay, which some players found enjoyable.
  • Character Abilities: Each of the six characters has distinct abilities, providing a level of customization and tactical variety during battles.
  • Atmospheric Music and Lore: Many users praised the soundtrack and the blend of mythological and historical elements, contributing to the game's immersive experience.
  • No Permanent Death: The removal of permanent deaths and injuries allows for more fluid gameplay, making it less punishing compared to its predecessor.

The main cons of the game

  • Linear Gameplay: A significant number of players criticized the game for being too linear and scripted, lacking the exploration and freedom found in other RPGs.
  • Recycled Content: Many reviews mentioned that the game reuses assets, maps, and enemies from the previous title, making it feel less innovative and more like a DLC than a standalone game.
  • Limited Character Roster: With only six recruitable heroes, players felt the game lacked variety and depth in character options compared to the original.
  • Weak Story and Voice Acting: The narrative was often described as weak and lacking coherence, with many players noting poor voice acting that detracted from the overall experience.
  • Boring Endgame: The post-campaign content was criticized for being repetitive and unengaging, with many players feeling it did not offer enough variety or challenge.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Inventory Access During Missions: Players expressed disappointment that they could not access their inventory during missions, limiting tactical options.
  • Character Customization: Users missed the ability to choose and customize their character builds more extensively, as the game restricts players to a fixed roster.
  • Dynamic Choices: Many felt that the decision-making aspects were simplified and did not significantly impact the story or gameplay, reducing replayability.
  • More Diverse Environments and Missions: A desire for more varied maps and mission structures was noted, as players found the game’s environments repetitive.
  • Depth in City Management: The city-building and management aspects were seen as underdeveloped compared to the previous game, leading to a less engaging experience.

Summary

  • Overall, King Arthur: Legion IX seems to offer a solid tactical RPG experience but falls short in terms of innovation, story depth, and variety compared to its predecessor, leaving many players feeling it is more of a DLC than a full-fledged sequel.
