Kill Strain for PS4 is a free-to-play team Internet shooter that makes use of an unusual system with 5 vs 5 vs 2 structure. The title is internally developed by a small team inside Sony San Diego.
Plot
The action takes place in the frozen tundra where new, valuable, and plentiful energy sources were discovered. Not surprisingly, almost immediately different fractions got involved in fierce fights over the control and access to the revolutionary technology. Soon it became clear that this race for power will take more than just getting control over generators and skilful fortifying your defences, as uncharted terrains hide bloodthirsty mutants that pose a threat to each party involved in the conflict.
Mechanics
Being a multiplayer game, Kill Strain utilises an unusual gameplay model. There are three, not just two, teams that compete with each other. Two of them are groups composed of five mercenaries representing two enemy fractions. The third team is a duo of mutants that tries to thwart the two fractions’ plans. However, mutants are not at a disadvantage – they have peculiar abilities that give them an edge over their opponents.
The fact that there are three completely different teams with different abilities makes gameplay multidimensional and unpredictable. The balance of power can change during gameplay and you might end up fighting both of your mortal enemies at the same time, as enemies can join forces in order to eliminate you more quickly.
Technical aspects
Published on PS4, Kill Strain features a top down view, which is unusual for Internet shooters and brings MOBA games to mind. Graphics, however, make use of the power of PlayStation 4 – they are amazing. It is noteworthy that the authors put considerable emphasis on community members’ opinions and released the title for beta-testing quite early during production.
