Katharsis is the work of the Metropolis Software development team working under the direction of Adrian Chmielarz. The creators have set themselves the goal of combining classic mechanisms for scrolling shooters with new technical capabilities of PCs at the end of the twentieth century.
The action of the game takes place in 4720. More than two thousand years before the events, which are the main axis of the plot, a group of colonizers left the Earth. Unfortunately, several months after the start the contact was broken and it was thought that the participants of the expedition died in the abyss of space. It was so until the moment when spacecraft with the characteristic logo of the expedition appeared suddenly in the sky and the attack on the planet began.
The player plays the role of the pilot of an ultra-modern star fighter - Eagle. It must stop the invasion of enemy units and at the same time discover what happened to the colonizers and who the invaders are, threatening the inhabitants of the Earth.
The game is based on proven solutions. The player controls a small ship and, moving from left to right (called scrolling), fights enemy units attacking it. The creators of Katharsis took care to diversify the fun, introducing many types of opponents and various missions, some of which take place underwater. Additionally, in the course of the game you can get various types of power-ups, allowing you to temporarily change your armor, strengthen your armor or teleport to another place on the board.
Great emphasis was put on the audio-visual side of the game. The graphics in Katharsis combine elements 2 and 3D. Particularly noteworthy are the smooth animations of spacecraft and impressive explosions. On the music track there were 13 tracks maintained mainly in the atmosphere of techno.
