Kaiju Panic for XONE and PC is an old-school real-time strategy game featuring action elements. The player is required to protect civilians against the attacks of different monsters. The game is the first commercial product of Mechabit – a British studio founded in 2013 by Kevin Tsang, who has co-created over 20 games for different gaming systems.
Plot
The word “kaiju” has its origins in the Japanese language and means literally “a weird beast”. The term was popularized around the world mainly by Japanese sci-fi films and franchises such as Godzilla. Thus the player deals with this kind of creatures in Kaiju Panic as well.
The plot in Kaiju Panic for XONE and PC focuses on the aftermath of a huge meteorite hitting the Earth. Destruction done by the object was followed by panic outbreaking on the streets of the world's largest cities. Specialist rescue teams arrive in the ruined places in order to get the survivors out and analyse the damages. However, another tragedy appears – along with the meteorite, hordes of different monsters have landed on the planet and are furiously destroying densely populated areas, which consequently leads to a series of natural disasters and weather anomalies. The player assumes the leadership over a rescue team that travels around the globe and helps the survivors by standing up to the eponymous Kaiju.
Mechanics
In the story campaign, the player is taken to a variety of locations where massive numbers of monsters are waiting for the encounter. The game is played in real time and when exploring particular maps, the player's main goal is to rescue civilians and build different defensive structures capable of stopping the waves of Kaiju approaching. Each kind of monster succumbs faster to certain weapons and has slightly different specifics. Fortunately however, the player unlocks plenty of upgrades alongside progression and those give access to gradually better gadgets. The player unveils the Kaiju bestiary and discovers the causes of the monsters "visiting" the Earth.
Technical aspects
Kaiju Panic for XONE and PC offers old-school visuals consisting of simple objects, resembling games from the early 1990s. The experience is accompanied by a soundtrack created by Martin Gratton – a talented artist who had created music for a series of commercials, as well as both short films and documentaries.
