John Madden Football is a sports game dedicated to American football, developed by Electronic Arts. The title was originally released in 1988 on Apple II computers, and a year later it was also released on Commodore 64/128 and PC with MS-DOS. The game uses John Madden's name - a former player and coach who is known mainly for his commentary work for CBS and ABC television.
Mechanics
John Madden Football is one of the first computer simulation sports games that takes into account e.g. player fatigue and injuries. Before starting the game, we can determine the quarter (8, 10, 12 or 15 minutes), as well as the weather conditions on the pitch (rain, snow, heat, cold or storm). Due to the lack of appropriate NFL and NFLPA licenses, there are unfortunately no real teams with real names of players, but most of the teams are modeled on their real-world counterparts. During the game, we can also create our own team.
Game modes
John Madden Football on PC offers two main modes. In Quick Mode, we can play a quick game without bothering ourselves with the settings. In Standard Mode, we can determine various aspects of the match, as well as access the extensive player statistics. Unfortunately, the game doesn't have seasonal games. However, there is an option for two players to play on the same PC.
