The game is set in 1961, Hollywood. The main hero takes part in a game show called "The Incredible Puzzle Masters". Soon he discovers he got manipulated into a series of mysterious murders, behind which stands a puzzle-loving madman. The player has to discover the identity of the killer, and above all, avoid deadly traps.

The gameplay in James Noir's Hollywood Crimes reminds of an interactive movie. The story unfolds along with your successes in solving puzzles. Game developers prepared up to 142 different types of puzzles – jigsaws, word games, drawing, mazes, and more. You can adjust their difficulty to suit your skills.

James Noir's Hollywood Crimes uses many features built into Nintendo 3DS, including the 3D display, the second screen, and the camera. The game’s graphic design has atmosphere of a thriller from 1960s, and cut-scenes were created with real-live actors. The atmosphere is boosted by appropriate soundtrack.
