Islets

Islets is a metroidvania in the form of an action platform game. It was developed by Kyle Thompson, an independent developer, and published by Armor Games Studios.

Plot

Islets takes us on a journey to a fantastic world inhabited by anthropomorphic animals. It used to be a whole, but now it's made up of small islands floating in the sky. The main character of the game is a rodent named Iko, who decides to grab a sword and set off on a dangerous journey to restore the old order by reuniting different pieces of land.

Mechanics

Islets is a side-scroller game. We explore colourful and diverse levels, jumping on platforms, avoiding traps and facing enemies. We travel from one part of the world to another on the board of a clunky airship. Over time, we meet friendly characters; we also regularly meet a guide who offers us advice.

On our way there are various monsters and air pirates. We eliminate them both in close combat, using the sword, as well as from a safe distance, using ranged attacks. In addition to regular enemies we face bosses who guard the access to the cores of individual islands. After charging one of those cores, a given piece of land becomes connected to others, which makes the process of merging the world a bit like assembling a jigsaw puzzle. Adding an island to the others also unlocks previously inaccessible passageways and new pathways, encouraging backtracking and careful exploration.

As you progress, you gain a variety of upgrades that allow you to complete more challenges.
