Iris and the Giant
A mix of card game with a roguelike, enriched with an unusual visual setting. In Iris and the Giant we plunge into the consciousness of a girl tormented by unknown fears and face them in the form of turn-based clashes using a deck of cards.
Iris and the Giant is a mix of collectible card game (CCG) and roguelike. This is the debut work of the French creator Louis Rigaud, who released an early version of the game in the form of a free browser game. The full edition was published by Goblinz.
Plot
In the game we play the role of the title Iris, who goes with her father to swimming lessons. While on her way to the place, the heroine feels that something is bothering her, although she does not know what. At the pool, the girl can't stop the feeling of depression that almost literally floods her. This forces Iris to go on a journey into her own mind to face her fears.
Mechanics
The gameplay in Iris and the Giant is based on turn-based battles. Our goal is to break through hordes of enemies (including bosses) and reach the top of the stairs leading to the next location. In battle we must watch out for the heroine's health, represented by her willpower. In combat, we use a deck of cards that we earn for victories and find in crates scattered around the maps. It is thanks to the cards that we can perform all actions: perform ranged or melee attacks, against single or multiple enemies, etc. In case of a failure, we loose almost the entire progress, and we must start again.
In addition to cards, we will also get some help from wigs that give us various bonuses, for example, more health points. In addition, during each approach can unlock additional support. Stars spread across levels enable us to fill in a special bar when we die, providing bonus gifts that go on to the next session. In turn, for various achievements we unlock friends with useful skills. Finally, during the adventure we have a chance to find souvenirs that can turn the game upside down. Thanks to them, playing certain types of cards will not finish our turn, in the chests we will find other loot than usual, etc.
Technical aspects
Iris and the Giant uses two-dimensional visuals, with flat, paper characters and monsters.
