The Firefly Diary (known as Hotaru no Nikki in Japan) is a climatic platform game in which by controlling fairies of light and darkness we help a lost girl get out of the dark labyrinth of corridors. The title was published by Nippon Ichi Software (including the Disgaea series), represented outside Japan by NIS America.

The action of the game takes us deep into a labyrinth of dark ruins, where the main character - a girl named Mion wakes up from a deep sleep. Without remembering who she is, where her parents are and how she found herself in this place, she starts exploring an unfriendly world filled with strange machines, numerous traps and beasts lurking in the darkness. What secrets is hidden and what is the connection between it and the mysterious ruins? Two fairies (the title "skylights"), coming from two different worlds: light and darkness, will help the heroine to solve the riddle.

The game combines elements of adventure, platforming and logical game. While playing, we walk through gloomy and dangerous corridors, avoiding numerous traps and solving a number of logical puzzles. The key to unraveling them will be the skillful use of the power hidden in the fairies mentioned above. Some elements of the labyrinth are better visible in the light, and some in the dark, so to see the elements important for the course of the game will require quite a frequent change of perspective. The aim of the game is to help our heroine safely leave the labyrinth and save her from her dark destiny. During the game, Mion will slowly regain memory, which will allow to answer all the questions posed by the creators in the finale of the game.

Graphic design of the game is maintained in a dark, oneiric style, and the characters themselves have a fairly clear stigma of anime style. The game is accompanied by atmospheric electronic music, fitting into the atmosphere of the game. The in-game control model makes use of the distinctive features of PlayStation Vita, such as the OLED touch screen and the rear capacitive panel.
