Hidden Runaway is a spin-off version of a popular series of adventure games, started in 2001 by the Spanish studio Pendulo. The game was created to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the series. Unlike the full-fledged parts of the Runaway series, we are dealing with a production that combines the characteristics of the series with elements of "hidden object" casual games. The title was created mainly for mobile devices, but it is also available in digital distribution on PC.
Plot
The main characters of the series, Brian Basco and Gina Timmins, no longer live together, and to make matters worse, they sincerely hate each other. Encouraged by one of Hollywood's film producers, who, based on their adventures, wants to shoot a real blockbuster movie, they meet again to talk about how their first meeting took place. Both of them play the role of narrators, and it is up to the players to solve further puzzles.
Mechanics
Hidden Runaway consists of four episodes, which skillfully combine elements of the plot known from the original and completely new, not previously visited locations. The whole was enriched with purely casual elements, such as scenes with hidden objects as well as logic and arcade mini-games. As in previous editions of the series, the story is full of numerous references to films, series, games or books. Hidden Runaway, however, is much less complicated than its full-fledged predecessors, and its target group is mainly casual players. Because of that, the game has a hints system which can be extremely helpful in more difficult parts of the game.
Technical aspects
Despite completely different gameplay mechanics, Hidden Runaway offers the same cartoon graphics, characteristic for the whole series. Individual locations have been refined in every detail, which is particularly important in the context of the constant search for numerous hidden objects.
