The game puts you in the shoes of a cook in a small one-star restaurant. Your job is to make dishes in three separate stages. First, you need to prepare ingredients of the dish, then fry or cook them, and lastly, serve a ready dish to customers. These seemingly banal steps become more and more frantic, as in time the number of orders grows and the time is getting shorter. Properly prepared dishes become you pass into a prospering career that leads you into the kitchen of a huge, five-star hotel.

The main attraction of Hell's Kitchen: The Video Game is the presence of Gordon Ramsay, the host of the TV reality show, who oversees your progress. He becomes a strict judge, ready to close your place if you fall short to his expectations. The game also includes Gordon Ramsay’s original recipes. Hell's Kitchen: The Video Game lets you compete in two play modes: the career and Arcade mode. The first one has you climb up the ladder of success, whereas the other is a single culinary challenge of the chef.
