Whispers of the Old Gods is the title of the sixth official expansion for the Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft card game released in 2014 on PC, AND and iOS. The expansion, similarly as the core version of the game, was created by Blizzard Entertainment. The card packs that are part of the expansion can be bought traditionally through in-game market both for real money and for the currency used in the game.
Plot
As the name of the expansion suggests, its story focuses on the Old Gods who awakened after thousands of years of sleep. Among them there are creatures known from the series’ universe, mostly from the MMO World of Warcraft released in 2004 – Yogg, Y’Shaarj, N’Zoth and C’Thun.
Mechanics
Whispers of the Old Gods expansion released on PC, AND and iOS adds 134 new cards to Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft. In addition to the mentioned gods who are very powerful cards, in the set, there are many supporting cards that took form of cultists of the Twilight Elder and the Beckoner of Evil. These cards boost the statistics of the Old Gods in various ways. Among the new cards there are also corrupted versions of well known characters such as the Corrupted Healbot and the Polluted Hoarder. What’s interesting, the bonuses offered by the cultists affect the gods no matter whether they are in hand, on the battlefield or simply in the deck.
An update that changes the mechanics of the mother game is an integral part of this expansion as well. The original gameplay model of Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft was divided into two formats: Standard and Wild. The Wild format is the original gameplay formula in which all cards and game modes are available and players can earn gold and rise in the ranking until they reach the Legend rank. Standard format allows creating decks that consist only of cards that were released in the current or previous year and of classic and basic cards that are available in this mode with no limits. Adding this season-based gameplay in which every year the oldest cards are removed is supposed to make the game more balanced. This change is so important that since the debut of the Whispers of the Old Gods Standard mode became the official format of the Hearthstone Championship Tour.
