Hawken

Hawken for PC, PS4 and XONE is a multiplayer FPS where we control mechs. It was created by Adhesive Games, an independent American team based in Los Angeles. The team is comprised of people whose previous project was the canceled Project Offset.

Story and Game modes

The game is set on a planet which was a human colony, but became destroyed by industrialization. Rival factions are fighting for resources required for survival. The battlegrounds are destroyed cities, and factories. The player picks a side of the conflict and competes against others in deathmatches, team deathmatches, and more specific game modes, such as Siege or Missile Assault. The game does not feature any singleplayer campaign.

Gameplay

In the game, the players take control over large and heavy war machines, which, nonetheless, are very fast and responsive; they are powered by rocket engines. The authors wanted to put the player in the shoes of a pilot who is supposed to control a big and powerful machine, but their aim was also to maintain a fast pace of the battles. Therefore, it is not a slow mech pilot simulation, but rather just a shooter that features mechs.

There are a few types of mechs (lightweight, medium, heavy), plenty of weapon types, and upgrades at the player's disposal. In combat, various gadgets can be used, such as rocket and grenade launchers, rifles, sentry guns or electromagnetic missiles. The mech itself can be equipped with a radar, a shield, a hologram and a few more toys that help in combat.

Technology

Hawken for PC, PS4 and XONE is based on Unreal Engine (Unreal Development Kit), which made it possible to generate amazing environments and impressive mech models, despite the fact the game only supports DirectX 9. While creating Hawken, the authors were inspired by MechWarrior and Virtual On series, as well as by works of a Japanese artist and sculptor Kow Yokoyama.
