Story
Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds is a visual novel from the otome subgenre, which is gaining more and more fans in the West. In this type of game, the main character - usually a young woman - as a result of an unexpected combination of circumstances is surrounded by handsome men, characterized by expressive, but rather stereotypical personalities. By making decisions at key moments of the story, the protagonist finds happines in the arms of her beloved.
The main character of Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds is Chizuru Yukimura, a young girl who went to Kyoto in search of her father, a respected scientist and doctor specializing in Western medicine. The adventure takes place at the beginning of the second half of the 19th century, which for Japan was a period of rapid change, manifested, among other things, by the fall of the shogunate, which controlled the country for several hundred years. Lost in a foreign city, Chizuru is taken care of by the captains of Shinsengumi, a special police force of the Shogun, whose task was to take care of the opposition and revolutionaries. It is worth mentioning that the characters in the game bear the names of real historical figures.
Chizuru learns that her father was working on a mysterious potion, bestowing the person who drinks it with supernormal abilities. Unfortunately, the mixture also had some unexpected side effects on some patients, turning them into dangerous beasts that began to terrorize Kyoto. During her adventure, the protagonist must skillfully unravel the criminal / political . fantastic intrigue and find her father, at the same time getting to know better the captains who take care of her.
Mechanics
The game takes place in a way that is characteristic of the visual novel genre. Dialog text is displayed on the screen, illustrated with two-dimensional, sparingly animated portraits of characters and backgrounds. From time to time we are asked to make a decision that affects not only the course of current events but also leads to one of the several endings. The players can also view the unlocked graphics in the gallery, as well as browse the dialogue back log.
Technical aspects
Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds visuals does not differ from the original. The only novelty are the illustrations related to the additional story paths. All dialogues in the game were recorded by professional Japanese voice actors.
