Guardians of Ember for PC is a hybrid-game, which combines features typical for classic MMORPGs with elements borrowed from the hack'n'slash genre – the latter are visibly emphasized in this game. Guardians of Ember was developed by Runewaker Entertainment – the creators of Dragon's Prophet and Runes of Magic.
Plot
The player is taken to Olyndale – a fantasy land that is being torn apart by the chaos of war. The army of darkness claims control over its territories gradually – the titular Guardians of Ember seem to be the last hope Olyndale has. The players assume the roles of the members of this legendary brotherhood, whose task is to face the invaders and bring the land back to its former state. The Guardians benefit from the power of the magical stone they have maintained safe – this will help them in achieving their goal.
Mechanics
In Guardians of Ember for PC, the player begins their adventure once they have created their character. The player-controlled hero represents one of the four races included here (Elves, Dwarves, Naia and Humans), as well as one of six specialties the game offers (Knight, Priest, Engineer, Ranger, Arcanist, Dark Knight). Particular classes differ in terms of their combat style and skills available – in combat, the player can use both melee and ranged weapons, but also offensive spells. As it comes to abilities as such, one will find over 300 of them in this game. Interestingly, the player can choose their second specialty once their character has reached level 15. As a result, one can play here as a muscle capable of casting defensive spells for example.
The game world consists here of 58 diverse locations and over 60 randomly generated dungeons. Exploration and fighting the enemies encountered combined constitute the pillar on which the gameplay was based in Guardians of Ember. On their path, the player encounters mainly regular opponents in large numbers, though one faces significantly more powerful adversaries from time to time – those serve the role of bosses here. Furthermore, the game offers hundreds of story-based quests and side missions.
Alongside progression, the player's character gains experience and levels up, allowing the player to develop the statistics and abilities of their choice. Obviously, one's character gathers better equipment gradually – apart from carrying more and more powerful weapons, the character can wear different kinds of armors. The player can upgrade the items owned or create new ones, making use of the game's complex crafting system. What is an interesting addition, is that the player can own a house here, which serves the role of one's base of operations – the place can be both furnished and decorated to one's liking. What constitutes a break from the actual adventure here, are optional activities, such as fishing.
Game modes
Guardians of Ember for PC comprises both modes based on the PvE principles (the players fight the AI-controlled enemies) and PvP gameplay variants – among those, one will find 1 vs 1 encounters, as well as team fights, including 3 vs 3, and 5 vs 5 battles.
Technical aspects
The game's three-dimensional visuals are decent. Thus Guardians of Ember is very similar to classics of the genre in this aspect.
