Global Defense Force (also known as Earth Defense Force 2) is the second installment of the Japanese series of third-person shooters, started in 2003 by Monster Attack. The title was developed by the Sandlot studio and it tells the story of the conflict between armed forces and the invaders from space.
Plot
Global Defense Force takes place two years after the events shown in the first part of the series. Although the attack of the alien race has been finally stopped, the cosmic oppressors don't intend to surrender so easily. They return to Earth to take over our planet and completely annihilate the human race. The Global Defence Force units, whose task is to fight the aliens using new military technologies, once again enter the action.
Mechanics
Like its predecessor, Global Defense Force is a third-person shooter, in which, while exploring vast locations, we face waves of powerful mechs and giant insects. In subsequent missions, we control an infantry soldier, who can use more conventional weapons (rifles, shotguns, grenades, rockets) or a Pale Wing soldier, equipped with a jet-pack and a whole arsenal of kinetic weapons. In some missions, we also have vehicles such as tanks, helicopters and hovercraft.
Global Defense Force offers several dozen missions taking place in seven different regions of the world, and most of them are focused on the elimination of successive waves of enemies. A total of about 300 weapons are available to players, although we can only use two weapons at a time. We get more weapons by opening the containers dropped by the enemy and they go permanently into our character's inventory. In the same way, we get armor and first-aid kits, which increase the soldier's health. Each stage can be played on five different difficulty levels.
Technical aspects
In terms of graphics, Global Defence Force looks better than its predecessor from 2003. The game also offers a two-person offline coop mode.
