Red Baron (1990)

Red Baron is one of the most famous aircraft simulators in the history of computer entertainment, dealing with the subject of air fights during the First World War. Depending on your preferences, the player will play the role of a German or Allied pilot and will perform a number of missions on board one of more than twenty planes.

The game is extremely complex. All missions were divided into several larger groups, among which one can distinguish: fight against one of the twenty-five famous aces of aviation, skirmish with an enemy squadron, reconnaissance missions, bomber escorts, airship hunting, balloon shooting or protection, and a few others. The player can also take part in a full campaign, both on the Allied and German side, where many historical missions are available.

Red Baron offers a dizzying number of more than twenty machines - all virtual equivalents to the real aircraft used during World War I. Depending on individual preferences, you can freely influence the degree of realism of the flight, using a simple to use panel. Options include the obvious: limited fuel and ammunition, navigation, aircraft collisions, changes in weather conditions, as well as the rare ones, e.g. glare from the sun or the jamming of machine guns. In addition, there are three levels of difficulty associated with mastering the machine in the air.

Dynamix managed to get us used to the beautiful visual setting of his games. This is no different in the case of Red Baron. The program uses simple, but very colorful vector graphics with well reproduced aircraft models, the possibility of looking at the action from an external camera and the option of recording the course of a given mission. A large number of photographs from the era, which occur during the use of the menu and a special module allowing an overview of all machines participating in the game, also have a good aesthetic impression.
