RKGK / Rakugaki is an action adventure game focused on arcade fun. The game was developed by the independent Mexican studio Wabisabi Games, which received support from Riot Games as part of the Underrepresented Founders Program aimed at creators from marginalized minorities. The producers drew inspiration from the platformers from the late 1990s, as well as from Japanese pop culture.

The word "rakugaki" used in the title (translated as "doodling" or "sketching") also originates from Japan. Initially, the police used it negatively, referring to graffiti creators, but over time it was adopted by the artists themselves.

Plot

The action of the game takes place in the futuristic Cap City, a metropolis once teeming with life and colors. However, under the influence of B Corp propaganda led by the sinister Mr. Buff the city streets became grey, and the city's inhabitants lost all signs of individuality. The main character of the game is the artist Valah, who declares war on the organization, planning to liberate the city through the power of graffiti and positive energy.

  • Visual Style: The game's colorful, graffiti-inspired aesthetic and vibrant environments receive positive feedback, evoking a nostalgic feel reminiscent of classic platformers like Sonic and Jet Set Radio.

The main cons of the game

  • Combat Mechanics: Many players find the combat to be simplistic and not engaging, especially as the game progresses. Boss battles, particularly the final one, are criticized for being overly chaotic and frustrating.
  • Story and Characters: The narrative is seen as weak, with flat characters and cringe-worthy dialogue that fails to engage players. The story serves more as a backdrop than a focal point.
  • Level Design: While some levels are distinct, others lack identity and can feel monotonous. Some players noted issues with navigation and the clarity of objectives within levels.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Grappling Hook Mechanics: Players expressed a desire for additional movement mechanics, particularly the ability to swing from grappling hooks and perform wall rides.
  • Improved Combat Depth: There is a call for more engaging combat mechanics, as the current system feels underdeveloped compared to the platforming elements.
  • Better Boss Design: The bosses need refinement to make them more enjoyable and less frustrating, particularly in terms of difficulty balance.
  • Enhanced Tutorialization: Some players felt that the game could benefit from better tutorials or instructions on advanced mechanics, like grappling jumps.
  • Visual Identity of Levels: A stronger visual differentiation between levels could enhance the experience, as some players found it challenging to distinguish between them.

Summary

  • Overall, RKGK / Rakugaki is viewed as a solid platformer with a unique aesthetic and enjoyable mechanics, but it has room for improvement in storytelling, combat, and level design.
