Syphon Filter 2

The second installment of the Syphon Filter series, the title is a spy game combining elements of action and stealth games. The title is a direct continuation of the hit from 1999. The devs did not make any major changes in the mechanics, focusing on creating an interesting plot and impressive missions. New in the sequel is the multiplayer mode.

Plot

The game depicts events taking place immediately after the end of the first part of Syphon Filter. Agents Gabriel Logan and Lian Xing discover the secrets of the Agency and become inconvenient witnesses that need to be eliminated. The situation becomes even more complicated when it turns out that the operatives' former employer is planning to supply its inventory of dangerous biological weapons to the rebellious Chinese general Shi-Hao. Logan and Xing are involved in an intrigue in which betrayal is the order of the day. The fate of the world and many millions of innocent people depend on their skills and determination.

Mechanics

The sequel does not bring any significant changes in the formula of the game. Syphon Filter 2 is still a third-person action game, in which the players perform various missions in different regions of the world, demonstrating their skill and wits. They can use a range of weapons and gadgets to help them eliminate enemies, such as silenced pistols, M-16 rifles, shotguns, grenades, stun guns and sniper rifles. The creators prepared a wide arsenal, but at the same time put great emphasis on the stealth mechanics, often forcing silent sneaking behind the backs of guards or hired mercenaries. In the course of missions, Agent Logan must, among other things, stop terrorist attacks, steal valuable documents, reach informants or protect targets.

A new addition in the second part of the series is the multiplayer mode, in which two players can compete in one of the eighteen arenas in a deathmatch. The protagonists take part in the clashes, including a couple of guest appearances from the first installment of Syphon Filter. The devs allowed for quite casual modification of game settings, for example, enabling the option to toggle heashots.

Technical aspects

Syphon Filter 2 does not bring too many improvements in the audiovisuals, compared to the original game. The creators have focused on building a dark atmosphere and developing the story, introducing only minor improvements in the game engine. The main characters' voices were once again provided by John Chacon and Zoe Galvez.
