Dance of Death: Du Lac & Fey Description
Dance of Death: Du Lac & Fey is a three-dimensional adventure game set in 19th-century London. The title combines supernatural themes and characters known from Arthurian legends with a crime story about Jack the Ripper and offers an extensive storyline shaped by the player's choices. The independent developer Salix Games is responsible for developing the title (the studio hires former Rocksteady and Lionhead employees) and it is the debut project of the studio.
Plot
The story presented in Dance of Death: Du Lac & Fey combines a true historical background - the story of the brutal serial killer Jack the Ripper - with supernatural threads of Arthurian legends. The plot is presented from the perspective of three characters: the legendary Sir Lancelot Du Lac and Morgan Le Fey, as well as Mary Jane Kelly, a resident of London's Whitechapel district (historically she was the last victim of the killer). The screenplay was written by Philip Huxley, known for the script of Batman: Arkham Knight, and BAFTA award winner Jessica Saunders.
Mechanics
In Dance of Death: Du Lac & Fey we observe the action from the third-person perspective. The game consists mainly of exploring faithfully recreated fragments of 19th-century London (location designs were consulted with experts dealing with the discussed historical epoch), conversations with characters (mainly various residents of Whitechapel), interacting with the game world, collecting items and solving various kinds of puzzles. The main goal is to get to know the whole plot.
During the game, we control three different heroes. Each of them has its own character, problems, and characteristic approach to the world. The threads of the protagonists intertwine and influence each other. What is important, the story is non-linear in nature - it is shaped by our choices, so the story experienced by one player may differ significantly from the one that will be experience by another player.
It is worth noting, that in the game from Salix Games we can visit realistically recreated places of crime - various details have been developed based on the testimonies of witnesses and documents from the real investigation conducted by the London police in the case of Jack the Ripper.
Game modes
Dance of Death: Du Lac & Fey can only be played solo. The mainstay of the game is a multi-threaded story campaign.
Technical aspects
Dance of Death: Du Lac & Fey features attractive three-dimensional visuals. The game is not big on realism - instead, the devs decided to use an exaggerated, slightly comic book-like style, which complements the dark subject of their title. The atmosphere of the game is also complemented by an atmospheric soundtrack and excellent voice acting - we will hear actors known from Black Mirror (Alexandra Roach), Penny Dreadful (Perdita Weeks), as well as hit RPG Dragon Age (Gareth David-Lloyd).
It is worth noting, that due to its subject the game from Salix Games team is suitable only for adult players.
