Outlast Trinity

Outlast Trinity is a bundled release of all foregoing games in the Outlast series, which includes: Outlast, Outlast Whistleblower (the game’s only official expansion), and Outlast 2. The collection arrived to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles, and was prepared by the same studio that started the series, namely Red Barrels.

Plot

The story of the first Outlast is set in a derelict asylum, somewhere in the State of Colorado. Since the compound had been taken over by Mukoff corporation, it was transformed into a secret research facility. Having received an anonymous tip, the game’s protagonist – a journalist named Miles Upshur – arrives at the place in order to learn the truth about the activity done behind the closed doors. Upon his arrival, he discovers that the compound is not only a place of medical experiments, but some dark rituals as well. What’s worse, almost entire personel have been butchered by unidentified culprits. From now on, the protagonist’s primary objective is to escape this sinister place.

Outlast: Whistleblower presents events happening before the blood-chilling story told in the original game. The expansion puts you in the shoes of one of the compound’s employees, the one’s whose message brings Miles Upshure to this place. The protagonist manages to survive the patients’ mutiny, which turned into a bloody massacre. His mission becomes to reveal Murkoff corporation’s well-protected secrets.

Outlast 2, on the other hand, takes the player to the Supai region, near the Great Canion, in the State of Arizona. The player assumes the role of Blake Langermann, who intends to uncover the mistery of a certain woman’s unexplained death. After a helicopter crash, in result of which his wife goes missing, the hero has no choice but to start a searh. Soon it turns out that the nearby village is inhabited by aggressive cultists who appear to be nothing short of lunatic. Blake has no option, but to find his loved one and, obviously, make it out of this place.

Mechanics

The games included in the Outlast Trinity collection, released for PS4 and XONE, are classic survival horrors, in which we witness the events in the first-person perspective. In each of them the player must explore terrifying locations, solve uncomplicated environmental puzzles, and mind the opponents. Enemies are deadly dangerous, the more so that the protagonists cannot fight them in any way. Thus, they need to hide using various objects or, if necessary, just run for their lives. What makes the latter more effective is the fact that all heroes are adept freerunners.

An iconic element of each of these games is the camcorder. While in the original game and its expansion the device simply offered the night-vision mode, which made it easier to navigate in dark rooms, in the sequel the camcorder’s functionality is expanded by the zoom in/out option and two microphones. Thanks to the latter, the player can hear footsteps coming from either left or right side. As for survival features, they still mostly rely on looking for batteries – without those, your equipment becomes useless.

Technical aspects

The games included in the Outlast Trinity feature good quality 3D graphics. This is especially true for the sequel, which is powered by the Unreal Engine 3.5 technology – the most noteworthy assets are dynamic lighting and highly detailed environments. The atmosphere of horror is also build up by original soundtracks.
