Gamerheadquarters: 7 / 10 by Jason Stettner
Empires Apart is a fine RTS, it feels similar to Age of Empires and does its own thing.
Wccftech: 6.7 / 10 by Francesco De Meo
Empires Apart is a more than competent real-time strategy game featuring solid mechanics and unique features. Sadly, the almost complete lack of single player content damages the experience a bit, making the game recommended, at the current price point, only to those who are willing to play online against other human opponents.
Chalgyr's Game Room: 6.8 / 10 by Robert Risdon
Empires Apart is a beautiful mess of a game. Designed with competitive multiplayer in mind, Empires Apart takes the fast-paced action of a professional StarCraft II match and sticks it into a graphically-stunning world that is a near-mimic of Age of Empires. Wear it falls flat though, is in the fact that if you are playing more casually, you will be destroyed, period. Speed is key and the utterly ridiculous keybindings do everything they can to prevent you from efficiently building your empire and destroying your enemies. With a little balance and far more work put into the keybindings and interface, Empires Apart could be an excellent alternative to RTS gamers that are tired of being utterly destroyed in the StarCraft II ladders.
Empires Apart Description
Empires Apart released on PC is a real-time strategy with MOBA elements. The creators from DESTINYbit drew inspiration from such series as Age of Empires, Empire Earth, and Stronghold.
Mechanics
Empires Apart is set during the Medieval Period. The action, featuring characteristic strategy aspects, takes place on procedurally-generated maps. Apart from creating and developing the army, you need to gather four types of resources (food, stone, wood, and gold) and construct new buildings. Ultimately, all of this serves as a preparation for real-time battles with other players.
The game starts with picking one of a number of civilisations that differ not only in units and buildings, but also strengths and weaknesses. Each nation is completely self-sufficient, yet all of them fulfil a certain role in their team effort. After choosing a civilisation, the player picks so-called Variants. They help to focus on a particular game aspect – from supporting allies to offensive actions. For example, one Variant can boost military power of your cavalry, but at the same time it reduces your fleet’s strength. Another Variant can bring a completely opposite effect. Apart from regular soldiers (including knights, archers, and the mentioned cavalry), there are also Heroes – special units enlisted in city centres and other important buildings. During a match, you can only have one such character, and their death on the battlefield is permanent. Heroes offer a variety of active and passive abilities, which, if used wisely, can turn the tide to their favor.
Game modes
Put out on PC, Empires Apart concentrates on multiplayer challenges. The modes implemented enable team games and 1v1.
Technical aspects
Empires Apart is powered by Unreal Engine. The action features the top-down perspective – units, buildings, and the environment are carried out in 3D, low poly style.
